A Question of Faith

She couldn't sleep, despite her exhaustion. Thoughts swirled through her mind, and Biara knew that if she continued to lay in bed they would only continue to plague her until she sorted them out. The recent battles in Alterac Valley, the political intrigue in the city, the threats of alliance assassins; all of these things worried her and nagged at her consciousness even while she sought rest. Reluctantly she pushed off her silk sheets and donned a sheer robe to ward off the chilly spring night air and left her bedchambers.

She walked some distance through the upper portions of her spire, seeking staircases rising ever upward. Finally, after traveling a good distance, she emerged onto one of the spire tops. This particular spire, set lower than the crown of the structure, featured a stone gazebo from which the staircase emerged surrounded by a ring of open paving stones and a small fountain. High above, the stars twinkled with a pale light, the sight breathtakingly beautiful in the clear sky.

Biara walked to the edge of the fountain, looking at the still water within it and then up to the sky above. She loved to stand beneath the stars as much as she loved to bathe in the light of the sun, and the beauty of nature was not lost on her. It soothed her and eased away some of the nagging doubts in her mind. As she tilted her head to look up again, she saw the moon slowly rising in the distance, its light adding to the beauty of the night. A stray thought struck her and a fey smile played across her lips as she looked around, ensuring she was alone.

She closed her eyes and drew in a deep breath, steadying herself and claming her thoughts to silence. Her years of training as a Magistrix made this a simple task, and the exercise further calmed her. She whispered into the night's breeze.

"I don't know if you do watch over our people, or only your own. I don't know if you would even heed my words, if you are out there, but I beg of you Elune, guide my path in a direction that will keep my people safe. Let my decisions reflect what is right for the Sin'dorei, and let them not bring harm to your priestess who has healed my heart beyond anything I'd imagined possible."

Biara had never in her life sought the guidance of a higher power, and after the words had left her lips she felt foolish for a moment, thinking that perhaps her whim had just made her look ridiculous. Against her closed eyelids, light built up as she kept the rest of her prayer to Elune silent. As the light grew, she cautiously opened one eye to determine the source of the glow, and both of her eyes snapped open as she gasped.

The moon hung in the sky, bright and full even though it had only just begun to rise moments before. It glimmered on her skin, almost shining through her sheer robe and undergarments, making the whole of the spire top upon which she stood shimmer with a faint radiance. Before her the fountain glowed, the waters catching the moonlight and reflecting it a thousand times, and she reached out, cupping some of the glowing liquid between her hands, the light staying in it as she held it. On impulse she brought it to her lips, drinking it as a sense of peace washed over her. She closed her eyes again, feeling utterly relaxed.

When she opened them, the glow was gone, the moon was a sliver on the horizon, just starting to rise. She shook her head, as if to clear it of the strange vision she'd seen. Everything was normal now, and if any of it had happened, surely she imagined it.

Then why did she feel so at ease now? So rested and peaceful? Why did her thoughts no longer churn with anxiety?

Smiling to herself, Biara slowly turned and headed back to her bedchamber. She didn't know what any of it meant, but when she finally returned to her slumber she slept long and peacefully, the moonlight playing across her from one of the windows of her bedchamber as she lay dreaming of a priestess with golden hair.
