The Sorceress's Apprentice

"I really don't think that's a good idea Malandrae," Eldre'nor's voice came from the far side of the room. Her tone was strained with anxiety.

"Oh nonsense Eldre'nor!" Malandrae replied from where she was laying on her bed. "I'm sure it'll be just fine!"

The sorceress was laying on her stomach, feet up in the air behind her as she poured over an open book that was sitting on the bed before her. Eldre'nor was on the far side of the room, sitting in a chair and sipping tea, scoffing at her friend.

"Professor Knox told you NOT to look in other people's spellbooks. You told me this yourself!" Eldre'nor chided. "You always do this! The minute you have access to someone else's spells you pour through them and try to copy them down!"

Malandrae shot her friend a withering glare before returning to the book. With a somewhat snippy tone she replied, "This is different. Professor Knox told me to forget as much of the Highborne spells as I could. She said I had to start fresh with new spells so I could learn the latest in spellcasting techniques. What better way than to look at this spellbook she left on the kitchen table? Come now, she obviously doesn't consider it dangerous if she left it about the house!"

Eldre'nor rolled her eyes. "She wants you to LEARN new spells, not COPY new spells from her spellbooks! Besides...how do you know it's not a test?"

The other Highborne paused for a moment, her face scrunched up in thought. After a moment, she shook her head, "No, why would Professor Knox do that? She's smarter than that and she knows she doesn't need to TEST me, I'm a perfectly good apprentice!"

The comment was met by another long winded sigh which Malandrae did her best to ignore. Instead, one of her perfectly manicured fingers traced the words in the book before her and she peered at them intently, a frown of concentration on her face. "I think this one will be useful. It makes copies of yourself! Think of how much more research we could get done with assistants!"

"Malandrae..." Eldre'nor didn't get to finish her sentence before Malandrae began to swiftly chant the words of the spell. Magic flared in the air within the bedroom and suddenly with a loud pop three more copies of Malandrae suddenly appeared, blinking vapidly at the room around them.

"What IS this place?"
"There's no magic in this room! This is intolerable!"
"Who WEARS clothes like these?"

For her part, Malandrae stared stupidly at the cluster of chattering other-Malandraes, blinking before she quickly rolled over and hopped to her feet. "This is wonderful! You're all my apprentices now! We're going to research together and learn new spells!"

"Oh wonderful! I love spells!"
"I have a FANTASTIC stasis spell if you'd like to see it..."
"Wait, this sounds like a lot of work..."

"Now, I will explain everything later," Malandrae said with a smile. "First things first, we need to copy down the spells here so that we can study them!"

"That's a great idea! I love stealing other people's work..I mean..looking at it..."
"What do I look like, a SCRIBE?"
"Who are you again?"

"Malandrae..." Eldre'nor's voice came from across the room. "I think I'm going to get a headache..."

Malandrae shot Eldre'nor another glare before pointing to the spellbook on her bed, and then across the room at the table. "There is the spellbook we need to copy, and over there is the writing desk where you will find ink, quills, and parchment! Let's get these spells copied!"

One of the mirror images looked at the book, and then back at the writing desk. She sighed and snapped her fingers. Instantly the ink and quill on the desk became animated with magic, a fresh sheet of parchment sliding out and the quill dipping into the ink before writing.

"See how easy this is?"
"Hey that's a great idea, I'm going to do that too!"
"Why are these beds so SOFT?"

Malandrae blinked in surprised as the other two mirror images also animated their ink and quills. "That's not really exactly what I had in mind..."

The mirror images ignored her as they began to explore the room. The first one quickly animated five more quills and ink pots. The second walked over to the door and stepped into the hall while the third pushed hesitantly on Eldre'nor's bed.

"I've taken care of all the work!"
"Hey there's a painting on the wall in the hallway!"
"This bed really IS too soft..."

It was at this point, that things started to go downhill. A shrill scream was heard from the hallway as one of the mirror images started shouting. "IT'S A PAINTING OF A ROSE IN A VASE! GET IT AWAY FROM ME! I HATE ROSES!"

Another of the mirror images chanted, and suddenly magical boulders appeared, crushing Eldre'nor's bed. The other Highborne spit her tea out in shock and then surged to her feet. "See here now! That's MY bed you fool!"

Malandrae turned between the bed and hallway when the first of the mirror images tapped her on the back. "Uh...excuse me...uh..me...but we've got a problem..."

Malandrae turned around to see what the mirror image wanted and stared in horror. The animated ink pots and quills had run out of parchment and were beginning to write spells and magical formula on the walls, furniture, ceiling, and floor!

"Eep! Eldre'nor! We have to stop them!" Malandrae shouted. Eldre'nor turned around to chide her friend when the mirror image in the hallway ran back into the room screaming and windmilling her arms. She collided with Eldre'nor who in turn collided with the mirror image that was conjuring more boulders for the Highborne's bed. The three elves rolled, knocking the real Malandrae and final copy off their feet to land in a pile of Malandraes and one rather irate Eldre'nor.

"BY THE QUEEN, GET OFF ME!"
"YOU'RE CRUSHING MY HEAD!"
"THERE'S A ROSE IN THE HALLWAY!"
"WATCH WHERE YOU'RE GOING!"
"THIS BED IS STILL TOO SOFT!"

The general mayhem was cut short by a shouted word from Malandrae, which ended the mirror image spell. She looked at Eldre'nor with a shrug. For her part, Eldre'nor's eyes widened and she pointed. "Watch out!"

Malandrae turned to see five animated ink pots and quills racing towards the two Highborne. They had run out of wall, ceiling, floor, and furniture space to write on. There were only two things left in the room that provided an adequate blank canvas....

Several hours later, Ilhedith Knox arrived home to find her two apprentices carting boulders out of their bedroom one by one. Both of them looked annoyed, and there was a distinct lack of talking to one another as they worked. The Professor paused in their doorway to watch them work for a moment, a quizzical expression on her face.  After a moment of silence, she decided that it might not be wise to ask exactly what was going on, and continued on to her room.

For the rest of the evening though in the back of her mind she wondered why her two apprentices had decided to write magic spells all over themselves...
